Post for April 9th 2012

Just something I did a study of a friend of mine. I like the shape of his head.
Nothing really deep content wise to comment on. This study is in one of my moleskine sketch books.

I always forget to talk about this guy when people ask me who my influences are, and I actually own one of his Art books.

Harry Bush is an artist who came from a military background during the 1960's in San Francisco  and then pursued his interest in art. Another artist thats similar to him is Tom Of Finland who I blogged about earlier in the semester.  He works with gay culture and themes in erotica. I admire the energy and authority in his figures each having strong personalities. The studies are simply fantastic. I would place him in a concept art genre or illustrative area but I do admire the figures very much in a traditional context.

Lauren 10 and 11

playin' with pens ya'll

Artist: Clive Barker

I decided to post about him because I think a couple of you will enjoy his paintings.
He is better known for his movies which include: Hellraiser (1987),  Midnight Meat Train (hehe) (2008), and Candyman (1992).
I suggest Nightbreed (1990).

New Assignment

Ok folks, here's your new assignment:

Hi Five to the Archive
An archive is any extensive accumulation or collection of records, observations, data, documents, examples, iterations. The archive has two faces: one is external, available for perusal, displayed for access, organized for the public; the other is inward-looking, dreaming and murmuring, composed of subjectivities and hidden connections. One can create meaning with this material through the quality of one’s arc through an archive. The library is, of course, a paradigm for all archives, but you may consider collected civic documents, natural history specimens, art work, films, photographs, and more as the material body of an archive.
In previous projects, we have considered the drawing in isolation or, at most, in pairs, but not yet in series, multiples, or multitudes. Now I’d like you to consider a single work composed of many parts and how an accumulation of examples might enrich, enhance, complicate or underscore your content. Think, for one simple example, of how Monet’s series of paintings give us an expanded idea of his intentions and content beyond a superficial depiction of a single haystack at sunrise.
I would also like you to consider the method of display as integral to getting your point across and creating the interpretive situation you desire. Think of how your presentation can allow for or limit the viewer’s access to the body of work such that they can draw conclusions, find narratives, make comparisons, feel resonance or discord. Another simple example might be the difference in interpretation of an illustrated book (sequential images) and a grid of framed individual works, available for overall view where the directional movement is at the viewer’s discretion. To spark some ideas, your mode of presentation might be: books, frames, shelves, stacks, drawers, boxes, piles, tabletops, slideshows, bulletin boards, and so on.
ASSIGNMENT DUE APRIL 24:
One work comprised of MINIMUM 12 (twelve) individual works on paper (possibly traditional drawing media, watercolor, collage, etc.) I am not specifying a particular size. You will give careful deliberation to the presentation / method of display as an extension of your content (Please no pushpins in the wall or tape. Unless, of course, this has something to do with the dialogue you are trying to convey.) Any questions, please ask. I will be giving a presentation which should help to flesh out this concept, but you should begin work ASAP.
Some artists to consider: Mark Dion, Tacita Dean, Christian Boltanski, Ilya Kabakov, Louise Lawler, Rosamund Purcell, Thomas Hirshorn.

Ben post 10

Bruno Novelli is a brazilian, contemporary artist who uses vibrant colors in his work to make strong statements. His work revolves around the differences between the organic elements of nature, and technology. His surreal compositions are very interesting to me and his use of color is very inspirational, since i too, like to use as much color as possible in my paintings.

For this weeks weekly drawing assignment i did a few fish studies for a painting i'm currently working on.

Here's my drawing for the photo realism collage project.

Above is my Photo-realisim project, an image of my mom and her friend in High school collaged strangely onto the breast area of a curvy female ideal, in a sense. I was pleased the outcome related to aspects of my content without much force.

Here is one of my weekly drawings, a representation dealing with a problem of puberty, STRETCH MARKS!! Having gained 15 pounds one summer in high school. I suffer a great deal of insecurity and worry over these small ugly marks distributed lightly on my outer thighs that no one but me claims to see.
I've been thinking a lot about the question, "Who is your audience?" lately. At first I thought maybe teenage girls could relate. But I've noticed I have a strange combination of "creepy yet cutsey" that makes it hard to pin-point who I am trying to attract. I am really getting into the Pop world in some ways. Its a kind of attraction that will draw in, but not require much from the audience. I hope to still evoke an emotion even if the audience cannot look past the brand and into a deeper meaning. It is where I am right now, I intend to be blatantly obvious until I can dig deeper into my original content and give it the time and thought it deserves.
I'm not a huge fan or an admirer of her style. But I am aware of artist Lisa Yuskavage who is a talented artist with similar content that I was intending to work with as my first layer of content. She has been recommended to me countless times. I have investigated her representations and decisions. I will post better discoveries later on in the day
