Readings for "Photographic Memory"

Hi all,
Below are the links to your readings for the Photographic Memory project.

Click HERE for an excellent interview between Chuck Close and Vija Celmins. This is copied from the Vija Celmins monograph published by Phaidon, 2004 (no doubt available in the UArts library as well.) Very thorough, readable, and relaxed, it is not only a good primer on Celmins' work, but an engaging discussion of studio practice, motivation, and sources of influence.

Click HERE for a more recent interview between Celmins and Phong Bui, publisher of arts and culture magazine The Brooklyn Rail. Again, an informal dialogue, but one which delves deeply into personal history and the working life of a practicing artist.

Click HERE for a long-form interview with Gerhard Richter by Robert Storr, eminent curator and critic. This is drawn from Art in America, 2002. It gets to the heart of Richter's personal history and the motivations behind his work. As I mentioned in class, Richter is someone you must be familiar with as students of painting, not just recognizing his images, but understanding the light he casts on image-making itself.

And one more, for good measure, HERE, a review of Richter's recent exhibition by the Guardian UK. More superficial than the interview, but a good orientation nonetheless.
